Bald Head Lighthouse, Southport, NC
Bald Head Light, also known as “Old Baldy,” is on Bald Head Island in North Carolina at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. An earlier lighthouse was established and partially built on the island, but erosion problems prevented its completion. The present Bald Head Light was built farther inland and was illuminated in 1817.The Bald Head Light was decommissioned in 1936 and is run by the Old Baldy Foundation to see that North Carolina's oldest treasure is properly maintained.
